Want to feel further from everything in your busy life? The Tuckamore Lodge in northwestern Newfoundland is a perfect escape. It is surrounded by wilderness and is incredibly quiet, despite the roar of crickets singing.

 

 

 

The warmth of Barb Genge, the owner, is infectious and I felt happier as soon as I arrived and was welcomed by her. The lodge sits next to a large lake which reflected the trees like glass.

The rooms and common areas are a clean Scandinavian style architecture with warm polished woods and a lot of space. Cool colored duvets stuffed with more soft down feathers than I’ve ever felt in a comforter made for two of the most restful nights of my trip. Soft white linens, plump pillows, and a basket brimming with rolled towels completed the design.

 

 

A walk around the property reveals the many small docks you can jump off to go swimming or just relax at. There is a wood-fired sauna sitting right beside the lake which seems like perfect placement, with the lakes cool, clean waters to temper the heat. I was expecting the water to be frigid since we were so far north, but I was happily surprised that the water was refreshing on a warm summer day.

The dining at Tuckamore Lodge is another highlight. Each night we started with a crisp salad followed by local cod or salmon and a homemade dessert. The portions were large, the service friendly, and the view incredible. There are large wooden dining tables next to huge windows which overlook the lake as the last colors of the sunset glimmered. After dinner we relaxed in the expansive living room that is surrounded by French doors. Breakfast included baked goods, omelets, and plenty of fresh coffee to fuel you for the day.
