I’m at the southern tip of a country that’s been in existence since the early 1500s. I’m in a sprawling Memorial Park dedicated to the 550,000 soldiers and 100,000 civilians who died fighting in a violent battle for control of the land I am now standing on.

The battle lasted an unremitting 82 days. The fighting was so fierce and the gunfire so intense that many likened it to a typhoon.

There is a Peace Memorial Hall which stands in the center of the park while 39 different peace monuments line the perimeter. The monument in the photo was created in 1960, by an unknown artist. Most monuments were constructed by bereaved family members and war comrades.

Each year, on June 23rd there are services held to commemorate those lives lost in battle; they call it "Comfort Day."

This brutal war made the country more resilient and also made them reevaluate their core values. Above all else, they now believe that culture is a supreme expression of humanity and they will reject any act related to war.

Where am I?
