Negril, Jamaica I am standing on one of the largest Caribbean islands off the coast of Miami, known for its laid back lifestyle. The town I am in was ‘discovered’ in the 1970’s, yet it is still considered an up-and-coming popular tourist destination. In the late 1960’s, the only accommodation in this town was one house called Llandtrissant. There was nothing more than a lighthouse to guide ships around the rocky western coast and the population was mostly land crabs.

In the early 1970’s, an influx of tourists referred to as “hippies and flower children” gravitated to this town for its warmth and the gentleness of its sparse population. When more affluent visitors began to catch on to the trend, luxury hotels began to sprout up. In the 1980’s, the town’s fame spread to doctors, lawyers, and businessmen who still adopted the “hippie” mentality, adding to the expansion.

Today, the land still maintains its carefree, unhurried atmosphere – offering peaceful friendships between the visitors and locals. Two shimmering beaches stretch across seven miles of crystal white sand (named Bloody Bay and Long Bay). The sunsets in this town are considered the most intense on the entire island.

Do you know where I am?
