incognito, Tropea, Italy This building that looks like a small castle is actually a church and a Benedictine monastery from the Middle Ages. Apparently it was well protected, sitting atop a beautiful rock island/peninsula next to the town’s beach and surrounded on three sides by the oceans slapping waves.

Overlooking the beach sits the town – a high wall of old buildings with lengthy sets of stairs descending down to the sea. The beach is located on a reef in a clear blue-green sea. To reach the church you have to ascend another long line of steps to the top of this big rock of an island. In the distance, an active volcano on another island can be seen and at night you may be able to recognize its flowing lava. This entire coastline is very popular in summer when nearby vacation properties fill up with people from the north of the country.

The town also has a nice cathedral and is filled with cobblestone streets. It is famous for its squid, onions, and salami and is located in the southern part of a highly Catholic country that is home to the religious leader of that faith.

Do you know where I am?
